DIGIT Lab team, an EPSRC Next Stage Digital Economy Centre, led by Prof Saeema Ahmed-Kristensen, has won two awards at the Digital Leaders AI Impact Awards for their innovative data & AI and stakeholder programme. The first was voted on by 23 judges representing industry leaders for AI for Enterprise, Industry, Manufacturing & Supply Chain, and the second was a public vote across all 36 finalists.
DIGIT Lab’s Data and AI Stakeholder programme was recognised for its Innovation and highlighted as an exemplar of effective collaboration and responsible AI driving meaningful industry transformation.
Big data and AI algorithms pose technical challenges, but how do we use this data to ensure the data and algorithms address the needs of stakeholders? We propose a novel approach to use AI and big data to innovate with data and address stakeholders’ needs. This was done in collaboration with See.Sense smart bike lights, who collect data from lights and GPS devices, and representatives of Dublin’s councils, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown, MOBY Bikes, digital innovation teams. The work was funded by DIGITLab and the European Institute for Innovation and Technology Spinovate project.
The challenges explored included: actively encouraging young children to take up cycling; ensuring that cycling infrastructure is regularly maintained; and designing and optimising cycle lanes/networks for safety and usability. We explored how sensor data and AI could support behaviour change, inform infrastructure management, and inspire new product and service ideas, combining datasets and informing data dashboards that were adopted by three councils across the UK and Australia.
With over 6000 votes, the Digital Leaders Community selected the ‘Innovation with Data and AI Stakeholder Programme’ as their favourite project of the year – ‘a truly inspiring project chosen by the community’ . Thank you to all who voted.
